The Opportunity
The Curator of Behavioral Husbandry will be responsible for the behavioral husbandry, training and enrichment across the Sea World animal collections, with a focus on increasing behavioural diversity.
Key Responsibilities
No two days are the same! You will:
• Provide technical advice and support on issues related to behavioural husbandry.
• Working with Area Supervisors to develop learning solutions and opportunities to use animal training to resolve any animal behaviour concerns or further enhance environmental engagement.
• Assist Marine Science Management team to ensure science-based assessment of outcomes of behavioural husbandry programs.
• Build Sea World’s behavioural husbandry capabilities through development and delivery of Sea World’s animal training & enrichment learning modules.
• Ensure continuous improvement of knowledge and skills in behavioural husbandry, and of Sea World animal training practices through professional networks.
• Maintain animal training standards to ensure that they align with Sea World behavioural husbandry philosophy and goals, and the Sea World Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare.
• Facilitate development of animal training programs to deliver agreed priorities (e.g. Preventative Medicine Programs)
• Coach and mentor Sea World marine animal specialists, aquarists and keepers in delivery of behavioural husbandry and understanding the science of animal learning.
• Review and update Sea World’s Animal Training Manual to ensure its currency and alignment with other key Sea World policy & procedures (e.g. Animal Welfare and Ethics Policy)
• Complete routine administrative and reporting tasks as required.
• Plan and monitor expenditure and provide information for documents as required.
What We’re Looking For
We’re after someone who is passionate about behavioural husbandry and diversity! You’ll bring:
• Tertiary qualification or Certificate III in Captive Animals or comparable, combined with 7 years’ experience, relevant to the role.
• International experience, highly desirable.
• Minimum 15 years managing Cetaceans.
• Demonstrated experience in Marine Animal training and conditioning essential.
• Demonstrated experience in coaching or mentoring people is essential.
• Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing animal training programs using positive reinforcement and that show case animal care to park guests.
• Experience standardising animal training into work practices.
• Experience delivering presentations/public speaking before a mixed general audience.
• Proven ability to implement effective work practices that adhere to OH&S standards and other relevant legislative requirements.
• Demonstrated excellence in both verbal and written communication skills and ability to motivate staff.
• Drivers licence required.
